Food labelling is a fundamental instrument for the final consumer to make informed decisions and it is strictly regulated.
European Regulation No 1169/2011 is the cornerstone including all the information that must be given to the final consumer on the label of prepacked, packaged, non-prepacked or prewrapped products. In addition, EU Regulation No 775/2018 sets out rules on the indication of the country of origin or place of provenance of the primary ingredient of a food and EU Regulation No 848/2018 regulates the production and labelling of biological products. Furthermore, Italian Legislative Decree No 321/2017 defines the sanctions for the violation of the provisions set out in EU Regulation No 1169/2011.
In line with current regulations, the mandatory information on the label must include:
- Name of the food
- Ingredient list
- Net quantity of the food
- Minimum durability date or expiration date (shelf life)
- Any special storage conditions and conditions of use
- Nutrition declaration
- Actual alcoholic strength by volume (if higher than 1.2% of the volume)
- Allergens
Food additives, which are governed by EU Regulation No 1333/2008, must also be indicated: for each of them, the name of the functional class must be included, followed by the specific identification name or the CE number.
The rules for non-prepacked food or food packed where it is sold are less strict. However, all the necessary information to ensure consumer safety are still mandatory, such as the indication of any ingredient or processing aid or derived from a substance or product that causes allergies or intolerances.
As regards the nutritional table, the minimum mandatory information includes: energy value and amount of proteins, carbohydrates, fats, saturated fats, sugar, and salt. The declared amounts must be per 100 g (or ml) of product or per portion.
